UIP in Rheumatoid Lung

This low-magnification view of the lung biopsy shows significant
structural remodeling with confluent areas of fibrosis (F). Microscopic
honeycombing (MHC) is the hallmark of permanent structural remodeling.
Note the lobules that are relatively spared, producing the so-called
"temporal heterogeneity" of the UIP pattern. This UIP pattern differs
microscopically from that of IPF, based on the infrequent occurrence
of fibroblastic foci and the abundance of chronic inflammation (CI).
