Advanced fibrosis in Langerhans cell histiocytosis, low magnification

Advanced fibrosis in Langerhans cell histiocytosis: At scanning magnification, the lung has lost structure to cystic change. The cysts are outlined by fibrotic lung (the pleura is at the top of the image). Residual foci of more normal preserved lung parenchyma can still be seen (NA). A small focus of microscopic honeycombing (mh) is present in this case, but these are unusual in Langerhans cell histiocytosis compared to even “low-burden disease” UIP. Hematoxylin and eosin stain, 12.5X original magnification. Click for high magnification >>
