UIP with carcinoma, low magnification

This scanning magnification view demonstrates the characteristic dense peripheral fibrosis of UIP (left side of photo) with visible fibroblast focus (arrows). On the right edge of the picture a focus of squamous cell carcinoma is present (Tumor). Adenocarcinomas are often listed as the common tumor occurring in UIP, but every type of lung cancer can occur with chronic fibrosis. Hematoxylin and eosin stain 12.5x original magnification.
