Fernando J. Martinez, MD, MS, is Professor of Medicine in the Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine, Department of Internal Medicine at the University of Michigan Medical Center in Ann Arbor. He also serves as Medical Director of the Lung Transplantation Program and the Lung Volume Reduction Program. Dr. Martinez is Director of the Cough/Dyspnea Clinic and Director of the Pulmonary Diagnostic Laboratory in the Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine. He received his medical degree at University of Florida School of Medicine, and was valedictorian of his class. Dr. Martinez completed his internship and residency in Internal Medicine at Beth Israel Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts, and completed his clinical and research fellowship at Boston University Pulmonary Center. He recently graduated with a Master of Science degree in Biostatistics and Clinical Study Design from the University of Michigan, School of Public Health. Dr. Martinez is board certified in Internal Medicine, Pulmonary Diseases, and Critical Care Medicine.
Dr. Martinez's research interests include pulmonary fibrosis and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. In addition, he has strong clinical interests in chronic airflow obstruction, interstitial lung disease, respiratory muscle function, pulmonary hypertension, and pulmonary rehabilitation. Dr. Martinez has lectured extensively in the areas of lung disease and lung function. He is the Principal Investigator of the Clinical Core of the University of Michigan Specialized Center of Research in the Pathobiology of Pulmonary Fibrosis and a co-Principal Investigator in several additional NIH funded projects targeting novel pathways and therapeutic strategies in fibrotic lung disease. In this respect, he is the coordinator of numerous diagnostic and therapeutic trials in idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis.
Dr. Martinez is a member of several medical organizations, including the American College of Chest Physicians, the American Thoracic Society, and the Society of Critical Care Medicine. He serves as a medical reviewer for medical journals, such as Chest, The New England Journal of Medicine, Respiratory Medicine, European Respiratory Journal, and the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, of which he is an Associate Editor. Dr. Martinez has also written several chapters for textbooks, including A Practical Approach to Pulmonary Medicine and Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis.
