Case Study: 69-year-old Caucasian male worked in Alaska for a period of about 8 years, during which time he had persistent sputum production and recurrent respiratory infections. He was diagnosed with chronic bronchitis and followed intermittently by his primary care physician for recurrent infections. His condition worsened and he was referred to a pulmonologist 2–3 years ago.

Family History

  • Both of his parents died at age 90. His mother might have had pulmonary fibrosis, but the patient is uncertain
  • None of his siblings have any significant lung disease
  • He has 3 children who are all in good health

Past History

  • Tonsillectomy
  • Surgery for undescended testicle
  • Prior sinus surgery

Allergies

  • Sulfa drugs and tetracycline

Medications

  • The patient is not on any current medications

Review of Systems
