CASE STUDY:
54-year-old Hispanic Male With Insidious Onset of Dyspnea on Exertion
CLINICAL INFORMATION
Pulmonary Function Tests (PFTs)
TLC: 3.9 L (78%)
FVC: 2.35 L (68%)
FEV1: 1.6 L (55%)
FEV1/ FVC ratio: 68%
Diffusing capacity DLco: 5.2 mL/min/mm Hg (15%)
There is a mild restrictive ventilatory defect as evidenced by both the reduced TLC and FVC. There is also a component of obstructive lung disease with a FEV1/FVC ratio that is slightly reduced. The reduced ratio raises suspicion for airway obstruction and the possibility of the patient having combined disease or a disease that can cause both restriction and obstruction.
