W. Richard Webb, MD, is a Professor of Radiology at the University
of California, San Francisco and the Hideyo Minagi Professor of
Radiology at San Francisco General Hospital. He received his undergraduate
degree from Stanford University and his medical degree from UCSF.
From 1972-1975 he was a resident and then Chief Resident in Diagnostic
Radiology at UCSF, where he also completed a fellowship in chest
radiology in 1976. Since then he has worked on UCSF’s faculty, and
was appointed Professor there in 1987. Until being named the Minagi
Professor at San Francisco General Hospital, he was Chief of Thoracic
Imaging at UCSF.
Dr. Webb’s research interests include CT imaging of the thorax.
He was a pioneer in the development of high-resolution CT (HRCT)
imaging of diffuse lung disease.
Dr. Webb is a member of the Fleischner Society; he was awarded
the Fleischner Medal in 2004. He is a Fellow of the Society of Computed
Body Tomography, as well as Past President of the Society of Thoracic
Radiology. He has served on the editorial boards of numerous journals
in the United States and abroad; currently he is Editor Emeritus
of the Journal of Thoracic Imaging. He has published more
than 200 papers dealing with chest imaging and authored or coauthored
seven books, including High-Resolution CT of the Lung, Computed
Tomography and Magnetic Resonance of the Thorax, Imaging
of the Airways, and Thoracic Imaging (all published by
Lippincott Williams & Wilkins). Dr. Webb has been invited to lecture
in more than 35 countries.
