Steven A. Sahn, MD, is Professor of Medicine and the Director of the Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston. He completed his undergraduate work at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina, and received his medical degree from the University of Louisville School of Medicine. Dr. Sahn continued his training as an intern and resident in Internal Medicine at the University of Iowa Hospitals, and completed his fellowship in Pulmonary Disease at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center in Denver.
Dr. Sahn's scientific interests include the pathogenesis of pleural disease, inflammation/fibrosis of the pleura, and clinical pleural disease. Dr. Sahn also has a longstanding interest in interstitial lung disease and has published several manuscripts on sarcoidosis and hypersensitivity lung disease. He is a member of the clinical advisory board of the LAM Foundation and recently directed a task force investigating the management of pleural disease in lymphangioleiomyomatosis.
Dr. Sahn has been the recipient of many awards and honors, including the NIHLBI Young Investigator Pulmonary Research Award and the Alfred Soffer Award for Editorial Excellence on two occasions. He has been invited to present a number of honor lectures, including the Distinguished Lecture in Physiology at the ACCP Annual Meeting in 2002. Dr. Sahn has been listed in best doctors publications since 1990. He is a member of various professional medical associations, including the American Federation for Clinical Research and the American Thoracic Society, and is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians, American College of Chest Physicians, and American College of Critical Care Medicine. Dr. Sahn has authored or co-authored more than 570 peer-reviewed manuscripts, book and monograph chapters, invited reviews, editorials, and electronic publications. He sits on several editorial boards, including those of Chest, Pulmonary and Critical Care Update, Seminars in Respiratory and Critical Medicine, and the Journal of Respiratory Diseases.
